Exam Essentials

As you know, California law requires that the Commissioner ascertain, through the use of a written examination, whether a license applicant is qualified to act in the capacity of a broker or salesperson. An applicant for a real estate license examination must meet the prerequisite standards prior to being scheduled for the qualifying examination. The DRE cannot waive the examination requirement.

Here are a few "Exam Essentials" about the salesperson licensing exam:

The application for a salesperson examination must be submitted to the DRE on the Salesperson Examination Application, or RE 400A, along with the applicable fee for the exam. (Remember that, as noted in the previous unit, individuals may file for both the licensing exam and the license at the same time, under the recent law changes.)

  1. The examination fee may be paid by a check, money order, or (in most cases) a credit card. For the current accepted fee and payment methods, you may call the DRE at (916) 227-0900, or visit their website at www.dre.ca.gov.
  2. To register, mail the application, copies of official transcripts, and the appropriate fee to the Sacramento DRE address. You will then receive an official Examination Schedule Notice (RE401A), which sets forth the date, time, and location of your exam. (If you haven't received this within 4 weeks, check with the DRE to make sure they received your application.)
  3. Once you have submitted the completed Salesperson Examination Application to the DRE, NO changes of ANY KIND can be made to the application.
  4. The salesperson exam takes three hours and fifteen minutes and contains 150 questions.
  5. To pass the examination, the applicant must earn a score of 70% or higher.
